Humans Need Not Apply

Image
The author ( C.G.P. Grey ) of this video is a very excellent science popularizer and this particular video makes you think... a lot! What the future will look like? Humans vs. (Ro)bots... Personally I still believe in human creativity and even if a world-wide poem and painting-based economy is unlikely to happen anytime soon, nevertheless it would be awesome :)

The ability to drink milk: the Wolverine in you!

Image
Today I want to talk you about milk! If you are an adult and you can still drink milk, well you and Wolverine have something in common, you are both mutants! In other ways, lactose intolerance is a normal thing. But let's go in order... Lactose intolerance is an impaired ability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Lactose is normally broken down by an enzyme called lactase, which is produced by cells in the lining of the small intestine. Lactose intolerance in adulthood is caused by reduced production of lactase after infancy (lactase nonpersistence). If individuals with lactose intolerance consume lactose-containing dairy products, they may experience abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, nausea, and diarrhea beginning 30 minutes to 2 hours later.... [ Genetic Home Reference ] Did you know that it is estimated that about 70% of adults worldwide show some decrease in lactase activity during adulthood? 70%!!! But also, did you ...

Fermi's paradox: where is everybody?

Image
Today I want to talk about... (I have always wanted to use this meme :) )   People believing in aliens' existence, think of them as much more technologically and maybe physically than we are... but have you ever thought about the consequences if this were the case? The Italian Physicist Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) did and he defined what came to be known as the Fermi's paradox. ( Enrico Fermi , from wikipedia ) The story goes that, one day back on the 1940's, a group of atomic scientists, including the famous Enrico Fermi, were sitting around talking, when the subject turned to extraterrestrial life. Fermi is supposed to have then asked, "So? Where is everybody?" What he meant was: If there are all these billions of planets in the universe that are capable of supporting life, and millions of intelligent species out there, then how come none has visited earth? This the Fermi's Paradox . [Ref. 1] "Fermi realized that any civ...
